Ideally, I’d invite a class to think about the details and develop their ideas AS they were reading and talking, not AFTER they’d read, which might have led to more varied thinking and paths. From there, it’s a relatively easy move to zoom out from the specifics of the story to a generalization about human behavior, as the fourth graders did.
