Seriously? The author makes you love and hate each of the characters. Both halves work. Refresh and try again. I loved how the author spoke from the perspective of the four women this book centers around - Birdie, the matriarch; India, her sister; Chess, her oldest daughter; and Tate, her youngest daughter. Thats it. Spend a week at the family home in Tuckernuck and then prepare for Chess's wedding in September. Blair Maynard is a single dad who works as a magazine writer. After the writer and his son get to the island the story becomes pure horror with sadistic murders and other violent garbage. It's the story of four women: Birdie, the mom, who's newly in love with a guy named Hank; India, her sister, who is sophisticated and cool but has her own love confusion; Chess, the golden child daughter, who broke up with her fiance and then he died in a rock climbing accident, so she's grieving; and Tate, the sporty computer geek younger daughter, who has a huge crush on the caretaker, left over from when they were kids. A thought-provoking foray into the lives, social structure and moral code of buccaneers and their 20th century descendants isn’t enough to compensate for the disjointed and sometimes dull narrative arc, underdeveloped characters and pointless scatological humour. The ending was unexpected and fun. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.
June 11th 1979 An amazingly campy, terrible, enjoyable beach read. It was a simple cottage with no phones, no televisions, minimal electricity and no hot water.
Worth reading, if only for the fact that Benchley was so knowledgeable about the oceans, sailing, and the realities of life both at sea and on board ocean-faring vessels.
Another way to prevent getting this page in the future is to use Privacy Pass. The mother, repeated calls her current boyfriend like a deranged high school girl in love, and when he doesn't ans.
Theres also a movie i guess but i myself hAve not seen it, could be good since while reading this i kept thinking to myself how well this would translate into film. In real life this would result in daily killing sprees, but instead (spoiler!)
These are desperate "men" with a bottle of rum throat slitting pirates and it is a father and son story too. I was expecting to give it 4 stars through most of it, but as I got to the end, it fell off the rails. These four women will grow closer as family and help Chess heal from her heartache. Worth reading, if only for the fact that Benchley was so knowledgeable about the oceans, sailing, and the realities of life both at sea and on board ocean-faring vessels. It's awful and shocking and exceedingly painful as it works it way out. The strength of this novel for me lies in the dialogue, especially between Chess and Tate. Benchley’s maritime thrillers haven’t dated well, so I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. His editor, though not as excited about it as Maynard, gives him enough encouragement for Maynard to impulsively take a trip, dragg. I've had this book for years and decided to reread it.
This is a solid three-star chick lit book. This was the frist, "Big" book, that I ever read. This was a good beach book, actually set on the beach. With his 12 year old son Justin in tow, he sets out to try to discover wha. The reality will turn out to be far more exciting and healing than any of them expect. The boy becomes apprentice to the head pirate while the magazine edi, An amazingly campy, terrible, enjoyable beach read. Dont expect a great ending because Benchley grudgingly gives a happy ending and I like it like that. The four woman go to heal and discover some things about themselves. The setting is one of the things that brought the novel alive. She takes the reader by the hand and leads them all over it making them see it, vividly. Scribner, 2019. The Island of Sea Women is the story of the friendship of two haenyeo, Korean sea divers on Jeju Island.
Peter Benchley has a great deal of knowledge about the high seas and the dangers that sailors encounter. I felt I learned a few things from this book and I was entertained along the way. this book was in desperate need of a different ending. I love pirates, so I was pretty pumped for this one. There was not a single thing that I didn't love about this book. Enjoyable romp.
Writer tried to find why many boats have gone missing in a particular area for no known reasons. This is the second of her novels I've read, and she seems to specialize in character-based contemporary tales set on Nantucket, a place I now crave to visit. It was selected for the Richard and Judy Summer Read, and won Victoria the “Newcomer of the Year” Award at the Galaxy British Book Awards 2007. The four of them head to the family beach house, which is accessible only by boat and thus the perfect place to get away from the world. I was expecting to give it 4 stars through most of it, but as I got to the end, it fell off the rails. Start by marking “The Island” as Want to Read: Error rating book. The Island shows he is not a one hit wonder.
Michael Caine (as the reporter) raking down pirates with an Uzi: “You’re a bunch of arseholes playing Long John fucking Silver!” Classic. They manoeuvre it alongside their boat, one of the men reaches to pull back the tarpaulin which conceals whatever it contains—and the reader receives a jolting shock which reminds him of those famous first, Two men and a boy, on the boat they charter to game-fishermen, are lazing away the hottest hours of a Caribbean day when they notice a cameo which appears to be adrift.
by Reagan Arthur Books. Cloudflare Ray ID: 5e50afc43d94ee2f I really liked this story of four women, two sets of sisters a generation apart, spending a month together on an island off the coast of Nantucket. Once there, he runs afoul of the descendants of Carribean pirates who kidnap him and his son. Instead of inbred hillbilly cannibals it features pirates tormenting the representatives of civilized society. Looking for something new to write about, he discovers that in one area of the Caribbean, hundreds of boats and people have been disappearing for years without anyone taking any action about it. Birdie, decides that instead of just her and Chess spending a week at the family home, it should be both of her girls for the entire month of July. Book Summary A new novel from Lisa See, the New York Times bestselling author of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane , about female friendship and family secrets on a small Korean island. The premise is batshit crazy – a magazine reporter takes his young son to the Bahamas to investigate a spate of disappearing boats…only to be abducted by the descendents of 17th century pirates.
Pirate tales can be amazing. This is pretty much a sea-going version of what in the film world is known as a "backwoods brutality" story. Michael Caine (as the reporter) raking down pirates with. Peter Benchley it took me forever to find you but you are a force. I was really hoping for more of a happy beach read with these four women instead of lots of drama. Birdie's daughter, Chess, is about to marry the perfect man. • The island has no grocery stores or stores of any kind for that matter. But those plans would not pan out as it was supposed to. Some of the descriptions of the waters and its rich life hint at what might have been this author’s greatest talent, but then one gets sidetracked into piratical history and anthropology. Two examples, one daughter is 30 years old, owns/runs her own (very successful) computer company, yet acts like a spoiled 3 year old when she doesn't get her way. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. I felt like there should be a sequel or something lol. Found this while cleaning out a house and thought I'd give it a shot. twenty word synopsis: 610 boats go missing, reporter on almost whim goes to find out why. I think it was at the point where Manuel "helps" Maynard and Justin "escape" things become impossible. Read 2,831 reviews from the world's largest community for readers. I loved the symmetry between the two sets of sisters and the tragedies that befell each of them. The sexuality is much easier to *ahem* swallow in this novel, as it fits a little bit better with the concept as a whole. Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week?
3 - 3 1/2 stars. With Chess hurting so much, Birdie has decided that they should return to their summer home together for a month of relaxation.
