She secretly extracted a section from “Pioneer Girl” and sent a draft of a children’s book to an editor. He gave her rides back home on the weekends when she taught in the city during the weeks. I'm getting impatient by the end of it, but this line gives me hope, "In the interest of keeping the annotative material from overwhelming Wilder's text, the documentation style used within the notes has been simplified" (lxvi). Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography also explores the history of the frontier that the Ingalls family traversed and the culture and life of the communities Wilder lived in. It was insightful on many levels, and one of the scenarios I found most fascinating was. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would for a few reasons. I can't begin to explain my fascination with Laura, Mary, Ma & Pa, but boy, did I ever love those books. The reason is now clear to me - she wrote her life story down once she hit her 60s, both with her daughter (private audience) and publication (public audience) in mind.
Award. I love this picture book biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder by William Anderson and lovely paintings by Dan Andraesen.

My very first concrete memories of chapter books were those in the Little House series.
I see Laura now more as a real person than I did before. This autobiography is the first attempt by Laura Ingalls Wilder to tell her life story, written even before the Little House series of books, but it is her last book-length manuscript to ever be printed. I even visited both THE Little House near Independence, KS, and Wilder's home in Mansfield, MO. Reading “Pioneer Girl” proves how far Wilder’s memoir lies from the narrative structure and technique of the “Little House” books. I have been waiting for this book for a, I am still marveling at the fact that I was able to get this book.

I got this book last year for Christmas!!! Cute book that sums up the entire Little House story.
The book then describes Laura Ingalls Wilder’s later years when she wrote her stories down and became famous.
I think I learned the same amount reading about her on Wikipedia but this was in the style and reading level as the little house books so it seemed appropriate.

This was a super slow but fascinating read, due to the intro and hundreds of footnotes. But when her brother disappears, he leaves behind an object from their mother's Vietnam past that stirs up a forgotten childhood dream: a gold-leaf brooch, abandoned by an American reporter in Saigon back in 1965, that might be an heirloom belonging to Laura Ingalls Wilder. It was not until now, almost sixty years after Wilder's death, that it has finally found a readership but it was well worth the wait.
Well, that was a slow but exceedingly well-researched read! She rarely picks up and reads any book without prodding. I was surprised to see that this is the first time Laura Ingalls Wilder's autobiography has been published. After multiple attempts to get it published by her "famous writer" daughter Rose Lane Wilder, they got advice to adapt it as juvenile fiction. You can find the complete dvd series at Amazon but I think they have a new improved set on dvd.
For those of us who have fond memories of reading the Little House on the Prairie books to ourselves and later to our children, Pioneer Girl is a heavily annotated book that provides the original manuscript Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote with every page filled with background comments by the editor.

The story with slight modifications would go on to become the legendary, (UPDATE: After reading other people's reviews here, I'm absolutely delighted by how many angry writeups there are along the lines of, "I can't believe this annotated edition has so many annotations!!!".
Finally, a word of thanks to Hill for bringing this manuscript to the public. Very comprehensive with wonderful illustrations, and yet perfect for younger children. I was looking forward to this for so long (I never had the chance to read the manuscript before like others have).
