After many breaks, many self-deprecating admonishments, and 3,400 ft. elevation gain, I ran out of water. The two “false peaks” are... Elevation mark 13,200 – 13,800 contain the highest grades of hiking with the worst trail conditions. Get there early! About a 1/4 later, turn onto CR11/Halfmoon Road. Don’t approach the summit after 930 or it will be post hole city for the last two miles. Camping spots do fill up quickly, especially during the summer.

Make sure to acclimate yourself prior to hike. Hiked Mt Elbert in July 2019 and it was a fantastic experience. This is not the actual summit, but if you reach it, the steepest part of the trail is now behind you. My two lessons from this are start early (by 6 AM) and be fit. According to 14ers.com this peak is ranked a 1, which is supposedly the easiest, however, I found the sheer elevation gain to be quite challenging. The first view of the false summit reminded me how close Mt Elbert was, yet how much elevation we still needed to gain.Once we broke treeline, Juno and I enjoyed a quick snack and water break. Hike was simply beautiful, majestic and the feeling of accomplishment fantastic, We drove 2 hours to Twin Lakes , however the company we first planned to use was closed . The other 3 routes are tougher, Class 2 or more. First of all, I would recommend getting to the trailhead early enough. The trail to the summit is a little over 9 miles, but don’t let the distance fool you. These kind souls coming down actually gave me much of their water reserves for my return trip, and then they ran down after. However, I would not recommend this for someone's first 14er or for someone not acclimated to higher altitude. The trail above the treeline steadily gained elevation as it switch-backed up the east slopes of Mt Elbert. There is a sign maybe a mile into the hike which says 'Mount Elbert', on to which someone has etched "5 hours from this point" and below that someone etched their agreement with the comment. I got to the trailhead (Northeast Ridge Route) at 6:10 a.m. and the parking lot was almost full. Pace yourself. Starting at 10,040 feet, this high trailhead follows the Mount Elbert Trail through a vanilla-scented pine forest up to treeline, with one major split where the Colorado Trail breaks off from the main path. The false peaks are always a bit of a letdown, but nothing could rain in my parade today! You generally want to start around 6 AM and be off the mountain (or at least back to tree line by the afternoon because the weather is more unpredictable in the afternoon). Beautiful hike. Don't think that you can show up with no water on an August day, not having hiked all year and just stroll up to the top. I am mainly writing this review for those who are visiting the area and live in another state at low altitude.
