This movie does such a fantastic job of bringing pure, raw, emotion, to the point where you sympathize with a character who is not really a good person at all. From a I want more Ryan Gosling movies perspective: Gangster Squad (the movie sucks but the cast is incredible). Solid writing and the performances are breathtaking. I liked how the first act leading into the second gave you the impression of "We're all bit parts in someone else's bigger story" - the story of one absentee dad coming back to rob banks to provide for his family is just a footnote to the reform of the Schenectady police force. Maybe the third act was a bit drawn out, but one of the most moving scenes of the film IMO was when Gosling's son visited his old trailer and it cuts to the long shot of him riding his dad's bike.
