“When social media arrived, models came back into the spotlight because now everyone could see what was behind the velvet rope,” says Maja Chiesi, SVP at IMG Models, the agency that represents Kloss. With her busy schedule, she has opted for approximately one class a semester, so far notching credits in creative writing and feminism. The nonprofit’s team is lean, with Kloss, her manager, business partner and SVP of SB Projects Penni Thow, five full-time employees and consultants plus help from three members of her management.
The juggle of work and life is something that we’re all constantly figuring out, but especially with all of the different things I have going on, you just make it work. I’m from the Midwest and I am somebody who, it is part of my value system – something I learned from my parents – to treat others with kindness, to show up and work hard, and give it everything you’ve got.
I feel like I’ve been able to see and experience all four corners of the earth because of my day job, and no two workdays are alike. Over the course of the next few months Kloss got an apartment in New York City and was traveling around the globe with her first major fashion campaigns for Bvlgari and Dolce & Gabbana.
The modeling scouts introduced her to agents and by the time she was 15-years-old she was walking in her first major runway show. To date, funding for Kode With Klossy programs has come from Kloss herself and the brands she poses for.
Kloss, who hadn’t done much more than dabble in coding, agreed to join one of Flatiron School’s two … By signing up, I agree to the Terms & to receive emails from POPSUGAR. This opened my eyes to the way that the language of code is ingrained in so many different fields, and I began to understand just how deep the gender gap in tech really is.
Enter Kloss, who has long presented herself as more than just a pretty face.
Though 74% of high school girls are interested in STEM, women only earned 18% of all undergraduate computer science degrees in 2015. She was referring to Kode With Klossy, the coding camp she started in 2015 to empower girls to learn to code and become leaders in tech.
“I was curious, why are there not more women in this space?” recalls Kloss. Kode With Klossy is a free coding camp for girls aged 13-18 that takes place across the United States. Many of the coders we spoke to said that the camps provide a supportive place to grow and thrive. But it’s not just the curriculum that these young coders love, it’s the relationships they are building with other young women in technology. They have vacationed together and have sat courtside at a New York Knicks game. And it kind of was like this secret alter ego that I got to live out and build a career. “I have this audience of young women across the country around the world, and I really care about the message that I'm sending them both through my words and my actions. “We’ll do as many takes as we need.”.
But the 25-year-old has leveraged her giant social audience – some 12.6 million followers across platforms – to grow a burgeoning nonprofit that aims to balance the scales of software engineering’s gender disparity. A full-time model, she is on the road for much of the year.
The 40-time Vogue cover girl got her start at just 13-years-old when she was discovered at a mall in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.
For me, it’s really important to use my voice and platform in any way I can to help provide opportunities for other young women to be a part of that conversation and be a part of building the technology of our future. “She challenges the status quo in so many ways, and I learn from her constantly.”. She is eager to expand her platform through a YouTube channel, launched in 2015, that documents her travels and baking forays. I started Kode With Klossy with the goal of inspiring young women to pursue their passions in technology. It’s not something I had access to in my school, and I have been able to meet so many entrepreneurs in tech, and I think everyone realizes it’s the language that’s building the technology of today and certainly of our future. “I think that me standing up and kind of identifying my nerdy passions has ignited that for so many other girls and that impact is something that really drives me to want to keep being true to who I am, and supporting other young women.”, Watch more from Karlie Kloss on "Nightline" tonight at 12:35 a.m.
“That fall when I started my freshman year of high school I got an opportunity to walk in New York Fashion Week for Calvin Klein and I was 15 years old. I’m constantly curious about what’s happening and how I can learn from those around me.
I think it’s such an intense moment in life being in your teen years and high school and you’re kind of figuring out so many things and I see these girls kind of come into their own power, come into their own confidence, and they realize all that could be possible in their lives, in their careers, and it’s just so fun and amazing to watch. I have incredible people around me and on my team, but I’ve also learned with time to work smarter and not just harder and to really only spend time on jobs and with people that I really love and respect, and who love and respect me. For now, the aim is to grow quickly and cost-effectively. That impacts employment, especially among minorities: Women made up just over a quarter of the tech workforce last year, though African-American women comprised a mere 3% and Latina women counted for only 2%. She is also close with Serena Williams.
